TMC: GHK AK Magwell

Somehow I always preferred the AK rifles to be configured as a range gun with modernized external looks. That may be because I found the ergonomics of the replicas to be painfully bad. When it comes to the design, reliability and stable operation definitely took priority over function. Do not look for comfort on these rifles! I started to finetune my replicas during builds and decided to go for a modern look as my primary goal. Using AK rifles may be easy but magazine changes are something that you definitely have to practice and get used to. It is not enough to push the mags into place, you have to hook it inside and then pivot it around. In dark or poorly-lit areas, only practice and muscle memory saves you and every small assistance is appreciated. The magwell is designed to do that, it adds to the movement to make sure reloading is a bit easier and more secured.

There are multiple magwells available for GHK AK rifles on the market. My choice was TMC, but only because of the webshop, Ebairsoft had it at that time. This accessory is not expensive, it does not matter where you buy this from. It is a 10-13 USD item. It came in a normal package with a plastic bag stapled with a cardboard top. The pack only contains the magwell and some screws, just like the picture suggested. To install it, the screws holding the magazine release button have to be removed, then the magwell needs to be popped onto the receiver and then it needs to be fixed by screwing in the magwell’s own screw set. The whole process takes a few minutes, it is not a big deal at all.

The magwell itself is made of a flexible polymer and matches the color of the replica. It fits very nicely, I had to pop it in place. It stays on securely after installing the screws. It actually improves reloading, before the magwell I tended to push the magazine too deep and could not hook it in after. Now, much less routine and practice is needed and it will also be a huge advantage in dark areas.

I think it matches the rifle’s design and especially the futuristic range gun build that I was going for. I strongly recommend buying and installing this because it is not expensive at all, and it actually adds to the useability and comfort.
